Creating stock photography is expensive—it forces the creator to take on all the upfront risk. This high barrier-to-entry puts creators from underserved communities at a disadvantage, and has resulted in stock libraries that over-index on whiteness, heteronormativity and tired stereotypes. To help break this cycle, we created the Take Stock program. Photographers are paid their full fee by Best Buy while also retaining the rights to re-sell their work wherever they want. This helps creators gain a foothold in the industry while also leading to more authentic and varied content. They avoid the risk. We all reap the reward.
